My first driving experience with an Electric powered vehicle has opened my mind to “What’s Next”. To actually do a walk around and see the technical advancements that have been achieved is remarkable. The quietness once the start button is pressed was eyry to experience. The Positioning of the controls behind the steering wheel has 3 positions to Drive/Reverse or Park, select your option, release the park brake and using the accelerator pedal to move away. The Ghost whispering experience now begins; this is completely different to the other BMW products I have driven. Be warned, about the sensitivity of the acceleration ability of the i3 as it sprints to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds and your heartbeat will take a while to catch up! The very faint whiz of the electrics spooling up is something else.
Two charging options are available, via a BMW Dealership, around 2.5 hours to be fully charged. This is free. Second option via your own 3-pin socket at home. This will take around seven plus hours to fully charge the battery, giving you a combined range of 245 kilometers (Engine & Battery). At an extra cost, you can install a quick charge unit in your garage at home
During my daily chores many shortstop starts were made visiting customers, I was surprised that 130 km’s was easily achieved only on the battery power. There are 3 power mode options Comfort, EcoPlus and EcoPlus + You cannot use the Air conditioner in EcoPlus+ mode as this mode deactivates the air conditioner to save battery power. The daily chores allowed me to experience the Ghost Whispering Experience. It was really mind warping to see other road user’s glace eyes wide open to see what this vehicle is! Use of the brakes has resulted in using the Electric Motor’s torque costing up to traffic lights or Intersections.
Bodywork and futuristic designing shows that composite materials are the way to go for the future.
